Twitter has begun taking steps to better integrate Periscope into its core app. The company announced today that broadcasts from the livestreaming app will now be viewable within Twitter’s iOS app, which means you won’t have to jump between apps anymore. However, you won't be able to create Periscope streams through Twitter.
Since its launch less than a year ago, Twitter-owned Periscope has become one of the most recognizable livestreaming apps in the marketplace, joining Meerkat and eventually joined by Facebook Live. But the competition hasn’t slowed it down, as Periscope has seen over 100 million broadcasts in just the past nine months.
When you share a broadcast on Twitter — live or replay — the service will replace the link with the livestream video. This is different from the previous state, in which Twitter would just display a link.
Videos will autoplay right in the tweet, but only when you’ve tapped on the broadcast first. You can enlarge the video by tapping on the screen, which will also display comments and hearts received from viewers.
Periscope CEO Kayvon Beykpour explained that “both Twitter and Periscope show you what’s going on in the world, right now — whether that’s outside your window or across the globe” so if both are around real-time conversations, providing the right context in a single timeline is important.
If you’re worried that this move means ads are coming to Periscope, don’t be. Only Twitter has been affected by this change, so, if anything, brands may use Promoted Tweets to market their broadcasts — based on specific signals like interest, keyword, language, and the device you’re using.
You should start to see Periscope support in your iOS app over the next few days. Twitter says that Android and web apps will be rolled out “as soon as they’re ready.”
